Join us this Valentine’s day at the Station Pub, Staplehurst Road SE13, the perfect setting for a series of films celebrating railways, trains, stations, railtracks, the very reason Hither Green exists.

First film of the series is the 1945 British classic Brief Encounters, which appropriately is about railways and romance. The film will be followed by a pub quiz, including some special film rounds. The film starts at 6pm.

After this first film, the rest of the program will be written collaboratively.
Is there a film about trains or railways that’s dear to your heart and you’d like us all to watch together?
Then submit your proposal, make a convincing case and we will choose from the pool of films on offer in the forthcoming weeks.
Just like a domestic scramble for the remote control, only of neighbourhoodly proportions!

Entrance is £3, participation to the quiz is £2.
Book your seat by emailing contact@hithergreenhall.org or by calling on 07956 614007.

These are the titles suggested so far for the next showings, in no particular order:
- The Titfield Thunderbolt
- The General
- Night Mail
- Metro-land
- Murder on the Orient Express
- The Taking of Pelham 123
- The Railway Children

HIther Green Cinema Day
Network:
Date:
Sunday, 18 October 2009
Time:
14:00 – 22:00
Location:
Firemasters Warehouse 174-176 Hither Green Lane, entrance on Lanier Rd
Description
We invite you to spend the day at the Hither Green pop up cinema!

Located in the warehouse at the back of the Firemasters building on Hither Green Lane, doors will open at 2.00pm and the day begins with a screening of that classic musical My Fair Lady with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.
The film also stars Gladys Cooper as Professor Higgin’s mother, she was born in Hither Green and we are thrilled that her daughter Sally Hardy will be attending the event.

Tea and cakes will be provided by The Golden Afternoon Tea Company, a perfect Sunday afternoon!

3pm My Fair Lady

6pm- The Balloonatic. A Buster Keaton favourite with live piano accompaniment from Costas Fotopoulos.

7pm- Pool of London
A lesser known film from the famous Ealing Studios depicting fascinating scenes of a post war London. A gripping and intriguing film capturing a time of change.

‘Basil Dearden’s paean to London docklands in the 1950s is as enchanting and as murky as the river: a noir-ish heist tale, liberally suffused with a fable of forbidden love and unrestrained passion. The heist element of Pool of London (1951) is well crafted and suspenseful, but the most striking aspect is Dearden’s tentative venture into racial politics, with the first interracial relationship in a British film’
Carl Daniels(screenonline.org)

A bar and refreshments will be available.

Tickets cost £5 at whatever time you arrive. The earlier you come the more films you see!
Available on the door or reserve tickets by calling 07956 614007.

This event has been organised to help save the local cinema in Hither Green lane and to promote the need for a cinema and arts centre in the area.
Built in 1913 it is one of the oldest surviving cinema buildings left in London, this will be the first cinema event held in this area since it’s closure!

All money raised will go back into funding our campaign, we desperately need your support!

What the developer will do next we don’t know, it’s too early to speculate but in all probability he will appeal against the decision.

What we must do is to keep on working on our plan for an Arts and Community Centre on Hither Green Lane.
Yesterday after the meeting we discussed the next steps to take and some very exciting proposals were put forward.
As ever, we need your help to make them happen.

In the next few days we’ll have a meeting to expand on those proposals and divide the work to do among those that will come down to help.
Details will be emailed out as soon as they are decided.

Following an exceptional amount of objections the planning application for the demolition of 232 Hiter Green Lane is now very likey to go to planning comittee rather than being decided by officers through delegated powers. It is therefore now time to lobby Councillors and mobilize the community to show the strength of the opposition to this proposal.

The “good” news is that the proposed design is so unsympathetic to its surrounding that it is very easy to make a case for its rejection.

We also decided to use this opposition to the design of the building as an opportunity to drum up support for our vision for an Arts and Community Centre on the site and are therefore now collecting signatures on this dual purpose petition:

We the undersigned petition Lewisham Council to reject the current proposal for development at 232 Hither Green Lane. We believe the submitted design is unsuitable as it does not reflect or work in sympathy with either the parade in which it is situated or the historic entrance to the the former hospital site (designed by Edward T. Hall of Liberty department store fame) that stands directly opposite.

We also ask the Council to work to secure the current building for a community use as it is a purpose built performance space. It is the only suitable existing space for such use on Hither Green Lane. We therefore feel it is worthy of special attention as a community hub for the regeneration of the area.

Please download a petition sheet and collect signatures from your friends and neighbours then contact for the collection of the filled petition sheets.

You can also sign the petition online here.

Meet us at 11:30 am outside the Kids Korner in Hither Green Lane for a group photo shoot for the local newspaper News Shopper in front of the Kids Korner.

Immediately after the photo shoot we’ll have a quick meeting to discuss the way forward. This will take place at the Parish room of St Swithun’s Vicarage (also on Hither Green Lane), it’s an excellent opportunity to share ideas and discuss how to best implement our plan.

Because we do have a plan, and the first step of our plan is to drum up support in the local community, come together with those that want to help and share the work that needs to be done.

See you there!
